Last night in Bellingham, rain fell, howling winds blew, and a cold hail front moved across our city. As it turns out, the energy gathered in that storm was unleashed on the SQHS tennis courts when the Mariners attempted to sail Into our harbor. The result was a resounding 5-2 win over a team ompirsed of tough competitors. This season opener was filled with excitement and tennis that was a joy to watch. Storm standout singles players Rachel Heinke (6-4, 6-7, 10-4), Sophia Francis (6-2, 6-2) and Lucy Walker (6-0, 6-2) all prevailed. Doubles teams Bernadine Salvatierra & Dylan McCoy (7-6, 6-1), and Lila Penney & Zoe Bates (6-0, 4-6, 7-5) added to our match score with their wins. Winning four out of five tie-break scenarios put the Storm over the top and demonstrated that this squad has grit and the focus to follow through and get the job done. Another match highlight was the sportswomanship exhibited by Sehome athlete Isla Hall, who loaned her SQHS opponent a racquet to finish the match when her string broke. All in all, this was a match filled with beautiful tennis and good vibes.
